The smell is there, the visceral switching off of reason and rational dialog is there, the abhorrent prominence given (even in “mainstream” media) to blow-hard caricature opinions is there, the tendency to rank populism above competence, integrity and wisdom in politicians is there… The sad thing is that when the final push comes that collapses the card house in an ideological bubble, plenty of people will wonder “what happened here”. Well, what happened is that the healthy dissenters are being systematically shouted and shut down, and in absence of a climate in which the necessary naggers of conscience can do their work, you get what you’re practically begging for. It’s a heart ache to see a society fall apart due to the deliberate and conscious effort by a few holding the strings of the deep-pocketed interests. Fascism never arrives unexpected – its germs are always there, lurking in the wings… It always requires the help of sufficient numbers of disenfranchised idiots to take over, and march into the next massive global conflict. And then, it’s time to let the survivors’ wailing of wir haben es nicht gewußt commence. To watch the tragedy unfold… It’s heart breaking to this foreign but fellow human being.
